Oh my, what's next? Lightroom 5. The update includes support for new lenses, cameras and bug fixes. Also includes the Fuji film presets update which is what I have been waiting for,for my XS. Holypoly Apr 8 New version 5. Just works as you would expect unlike Aperture and iPhoto.
Handles anything I can throw at it and great tools for easily enhancing my photographs, aand alot cheaper then Photoshop. Bigboysdad Oct 28 JanyeB Sep 20 Adobe Lightroom 5x is just great. ChristopherGrant Jun 26 Regular updates, consistent new features, consistent patch updates.
Strong selective editing tools. Fairly fast in cataloging features. CONS: Non-mac like experience. Certain selective editing tools are slow. No mac full screen option. Aperture is simply too dated and CaptureOne is very good but still very cumbersome and very buggy. If you're new to this type of application you may want to check out both first, but ultimately Lightroom seems to be where most of the consumers land.
Your best 'safe' choice is Lightroom, for now. Bossa-Nova Jun 10 In Lightroom 4. The aspect ratio isn't locked when you change orientation of the tool with the mouse, so it's not possible to crop an image keeping a chosen aspect ratio.
RunTime Apr 16 Monkeyjunkey Apr 16 Lightroom 5 finally brings png file support. Foulger Apr 15 Good old superefficient adobe. Lightroom 5 link goes straight to Lightroom 4 - nothing about 5 on their site. Maximum prices minimum efficiency. Needs Retina support, also can hang on my rMBP Slow, slow and slow.
Ok, Lightroom it's easy to use and it has some wonderful features and high compatibility, but it is so slow that becomes unusable. If you are on version 3 forget about version 4, move to aperture instead. MHerndz Sep 23 Idiots… going back to Aperture…. ChristopherGrant Aug 31 Generally speaking 4.
However there's an occasional lag in loading photographs in the develop module which is slower than in 4. Aside from the overall app being a bit faster, it appears as if Mountain Lion doesn't release the used memory from LR still, even after closing of LR. This occurs in 4. Elektraua May 31 More lags, more bugs. Monkeyjunkey May 24 Lightroom does not support. Interesting that an image browser does not support image files. I do understand where this is coming from, since Lightroom was designed to deal with images made by high-end digital cameras.
But it has grown and become much more. Now it would be great if Adobe did it's homework and added png support. Holypoly Apr 14 Very impressed. Long time user of Lightroom 3 , I was at first a bit thrown by the slight changes to the developing tools. But after reading the tutorial, tried it out and was blown away by the improvements to highlight and shadows controls.
Also, importantly, they've brought video file management into the fold. And, finally, a drop in price. Probably the best Adobe product in a long, long time and I'm not an Adobe fan boy by any means. Strongly recommended. Bigboysdad Mar 9 Although running a Mac on 2GB of memory is a bit of a joke these days, that's hardly ever been a problem when running Lightroom 3 and I love it. This really is a dealbreaker for me in deciding whether to buy this latest version. Revco Mar 7 Bnz Mar 6 Great update and I am pretty sure that Adobe did good to lower the price.
I know I have bought it today with the release of 4. I am pretty sure that I am not alone with this as there is really a lot to like about Lightroom - it is different in many ways and not the usual Adobe mess.
M85 Mar 6 Terrific update. Clunky interface, but very very deep functionality, especially now it handles cataloguing video even MTS files , soft proofing, even finer quality raw processing It's also way faster and generally more professional than Aperture. Kihoalu Jan 16 This is not a review: I'd like to test drive Lightroom. LR 3 was fantastic. I don't understand why the highlight recovery button is not existing anymore Id-Ego-SuperEgo Nov 5 On top of my earlier complaints, I must stress that the exported jpegs retain little if any at all of the original metadata.
In other words, an image shot in, say, December , and exported in November of will show November under EXIF data, not Likewise, much else of metadata is lost on export.
Again, everything I noted in my earlier review is as relevant now as it were in the time of my original review. Lightroom hasn't moved a millimetre further - if anything, it has deteriorated even more. Lesta Oct 4 Fantastic App. Radus Sep 30 Cgc Sep 29 B-Jefferson-Le-Blanc Aug 24 It's too soon to give a real review, but I must say that the bugs that bothered me in Lightroom 3.
In preliminary testing it seems solid and responsive. The installer will not replace your existing copy of Lightroom so you should feel free to try it out. And, if you are already using a version of Lightroom 3, this one will not affect your catalog, so that you can still use your older copy if you wish.
This is on the Mac platform; I can't speak for the Windows version. Rekramer Aug 6 This in not PPC compatible! B-Jefferson-Le-Blanc May 25 They've left some of the bugs they created unresolved, despite the twice repeated, exceedingly vague claim to have resolved just such problems. As one who has participated extensively on the Adobe forums discussing these bugs, I'm sorely disappointed. In my mind the Lightroom team's credibility is growing very thin indeed. They appear to be spending their time working on new features at the expense of solving existing problems.
The evidence accumulated over the last few updates suggests their priorities need some serious readjustment. Cgc May 24 M85 May 24 If you shoot with a Sony or Fujifilm camera, there are specific versions of the software, making colour management even more efficient. There are also usually discounts on these versions.
Viewing your photos in Capture One Pro review is an eye-opener, thanks to colour profiles which are tailored for every camera. With Lightroom, imported files have a more neutral starting point. Capture One Pro has more ways to manipulate colour than Lightroom, allowing you to make colour balance changes to shadow, mid-tone and highlights, and a channel dedicated to skin tones. Take a look at the video below to see how a talented portrait photographer uses the software to edit all his high-end fashion portraits.
From there you can adjust the affected color range, hue, saturation and lightness. The 3-Way option even lets you adjust the color tint separately in the shadow, midtone and highlight areas. Need to smooth out the skin tones? No problem. Simply choose the Skin Tone tab, select a color range, and adjust the uniformity sliders. Instead, everything sits in one interface and you toggle through buttons to change functions — this mixed asset management can be confusing at first. There are tons of adjustment options, many of which the average photographer would never use.
If you thought Lightroom was tricky to master, just wait till you start exploring the capabilities of C1! Tethering features in Capture One Pro makes it the obvious choice for studio photographers. This is no surprise since tethered shooting functionality is one of the main reasons the software was developed. Lightroom only has adjustment points for brushes or gradients. When you use layers in Capture One Pro, you can make targeted local adjustments to your photos and still use the majority of the editing tools available, not just the ones in a given tool.
This is a huge benefit for those who like a fine level of control over photo manipulation. For everyone else, however, it may be slightly overkill. Updates and support for new cameras and lenses are excellent in DxO PhotoLab 4, with the software detecting the imported RAW file and downloading any modules profiles for the files. The non-destructive editing is smooth and fast, and version 4 brings a number of useful features, including:. Darktable is our choice of the top free Lightroom alternative.
Like Lightroom, this app has a full-featured image adjustment suite and extensive library management options. As far as the UI is concerned, Darktable looks a lot like Lightroom.
Once you get used to the interface you can fully customize Darktable , setting it up for just the editing tools you want to use. You can also set up automatic scripts to seriously streamline your workflow, and make repetitive tasks fast and more efficient. Speaking of tutorials, Darktable comes with excellent free documentation.
You can see more differences in our comparison here. Most open source folks choose Digikam. Overall, though, this is the most developed of all the open-source free Lightroom alternatives and is well worth trying out. Next in line, and a close second is the free photo editing app RawTherapee, available for Mac, Windows and Linux. RawTherapee has all the standard editing features needed in a Raw editor and includes advanced color controls and lens corrections. The Raw processing in RawTherapee is spectacular for a free app, and the program has a strong, devoted Fujifilm user following.
Fujifilm Raw files are notoriously challenging to render well. Also, if English is not your strong suit, RawTherapee is available in over 25 languages and will soon have more — very impressive, especially considering this is a completely free app — something not offered by Lightroom. One place where RawTherapee really lags, though, is easy-to-find documentation.
Other new features include SmugMug integration, better noise reduction, an excellent map view mode, new timeline albums, and a new focus mask overlay so you can tell which photos are in focus. A monthly recurring cost is a prime factor in moving away from Lightroom in the first place. Adobe continues to dominate the design world with a plethora of apps and services.
With that, the company kept increasing the price of single apps subscriptions and the Creative Cloud package. Pixelmator is best for novice photographers who are looking for a one-click fix. There are plenty of filters and effects that will instantly improve your images.
On the plus side, you can start projects from scratch. Pixelmator is especially good for creating digital artwork. It also only works as a photo editing program, not a photo organizer. While some free alternatives, such as Darktable, offer many of the same tools, others only offer simple image adjustments.
Depending on your editing style, you may need to download a couple of different free programs to get all of the tools you need. Even so, free editing programs have come a long way in the past decade.
